I am trying Recorder Karate with 4th and 5th graders. I have added a twist of added motivation. When a student earns a belt, he/she also gets to ring a gong that I have on my desk. When the other students hear the gong, they are to stop, stand, and salute. The salute is a martial arts type of bow while holding the recorder in front of them (left hand above their right).
