I was reviewing steady beat with my first graders when the kids gave me an idea for a lesson: find an existing song to correspond with words related to a steady beat in Buzz and Ollie's Steady Beat Adventure.

First, read the book Buzz and Ollie's Steady Beat Adventure by Donna Sloan Thorne and Marilyn Sloan Felts.

Next, make a list of all the things in the book that make a steady beat.

Then, sing a known song or recite a known poem for each item. Make sure that the students pat the steady beat throughout each song/poem.

Here is our list of songs:

rain - "Rain, Rain Go Away"

windshield wipers - the wiper verse from "Wheels On The Bus"

  clock - "Hickory Dickory Dock"

hammer - "Johnny Works With One Hammer"
