I bought black rubber O rings from the local hardware store. The rings come in different sizes and fit soprano, alto, and different brands of recorders. I like these because they fit tightly on the instrument, but they don't slip or scratch. I have my kids hang their recorders from their necks with colored ribbon. The colored ribbon loops through the O ring. I've attached a clip (that once held my convention badge) to the O ring. The other end snaps, so I can change ribbons or change from alto to soprano recorder whenever I want.
