I Sense It's The Holidays

The holidays are here and your five senses (smelling, seeing, tasting, hearing, touching) are being utilized to the max! But have you paused for a moment to really take in what each sense is doing? This happy pop/rock song celebrates all of the sights, sounds, tastes, feels, and aromas of the holiday season.

The verses move by really fast so get your singers pumped before singing this! If they sing with energy, the verses will be easier to sing, and they'll have better enunciation. Then hit the chorus hard, nice and loud at measure 17. At measure 21, part 2 is introduced. It's not just harmony, it's independent rhythmically at times. There is a recording of an isolated part 2 (in two pieces) online to help your students to learn.

If you want to add movement to this piece, it would be easy enough by just having kids point to their ears, eyes, mouths, and noses, depending on which words they're singing. For touch, they could just wiggle their fingers.

As an idea for an additional classroom exercise, your students could map things out on a whiteboard like a matching game. Let them come up with things they experience around the holidays, and have them guess which sense is being used.
