Give It A Rest

by Teresa Jennings

This light and bouncy tune helps students learn about the quarter rest. The ongoing woodblock rhythm gives it a tap-style feel while also giving a steady beat to follow for counting, singing, and of course, resting.

The first time through the song, we suggest letting various soloists say the word "rest" each time one appears in the melody. These are marked on the music for easy reference. The second time through is a little tricky because this time the rests are silent. But to highlight each one, students should put their fingers to their lips as if to say "shh" each time. The tricky part is being quiet. (Good luck!) Fortunately, they do actually get to say "shh" for the very last rest of the song.
