Classical Bells

by Karl Hitzemann

A Collection of Favorites for Young Players

Handbells are fun to play. And they're a great way for young musicians to master skills in ear-training, music reading, and ensemble playing. That's why we thought it was a great idea to combine handbells with classical music. That way, kids can have fun performing and learn about some of the greatest musical works ever written.

The collection features six favorite pieces from six of classical music's greatest composers - Pachelbel, Vivaldi, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Using the diatonic bells, the tunes are in settings that are designed to feature young bell players. And of course, these arrangements will work with any type of pitched percussion instruments, such as Boomwhackers®. This collection includes:

  • Vivaldi's Spring - From Concerto No. 1 in E major, this piece features a lively orchestration that your students will enjoy and want to play along.
  • Haydn's Surprise - This tune, from Symphony No. 94, comes with two tempos, so you can rehearse and then show off a bit!
  • Mozart's Sonata - The setting of this very familiar piano sonata (Sonata in C, K. 545) features an orchestra and, of course, handbells!
  • Bach's Sheep - This beautiful melody from Sheep May Safely Graze is perfect for handbells. It has two tempos for you to choose from.
  • Pachelbel's Canon - The famous Canon in D set for bells and orchestra.
  • Beethoven's Joy - From Beethoven's monumental 9th Symphony, this will make for an impressive performance piece.
