Rollin' To Balboa

by Paul Jennings

This tune is a relaxed Latin jazz setting of a favorite recorder tune, "Merrily We Roll Along." The melody is tucked into a rich set of passing chords set over a cool bass line performed by bass and bass trombone. (It might be fun to not tell your students what the melody is and see if they notice!) Arranged in the style of Stan Kenton, which this tune honors, the title of the song hints at the melody and alludes to his band – the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa Bay in California is where his band had success, and Balboa appears on at least one of Kenton's album titles. The soprano recorder plays the notes G, A, and B, while the optional alto recorder uses the notes C, D, E, F, and G. (from Music K-8, Vol. 22, No. 3)
