Up until the 1993-1994 school year, new incoming teachers outnumbered the number of teachers leaving education. At this point, the rate of teachers leaving accelerated. The most recent data for the 1999-2000 school year shows that 50,000 more teachers leave education than are replaced by new incoming teachers.
