I often do this with my Kinders and 1sts, and I always start teaching it by
having the students copy me as I do the motions before they actually do it
with a partner (and with Kinders I usually stop there and don't even get
into partners with them). Usually we all stand in a circle and do the
motions together all facing the middle of the circle. In the "take hands
and switch places" spot we just turn in a circle in place for 4 beats, and
then we jump and all turn our backs on everyone, facing outside the circle,
on "maybe nein." Then we either turn around and do it again, or we just
start again as we are facing outside the circle so that we're back facing
each other around the circle when we jump turn the second time. Now that
y'all have reminded me of this, I think this may definitely be on the menu
for a remote learning lesson, as my system is currently remote until almost
the end of the month. I don't know if I can get my 1st graders to stand up
and do anything (they have specials first thing in the morning, even when
we're on zoom, and there is definitely a sitting up and getting out of bed
and being awake and already being finished with breakfast issue) but at
least some of my kinders would eat it up...
On a related note, I bought the book "While We Can't Hug" (Eoin McLaughlin)
today after seeing some great lesson ideas on the Teaching With Orff blog (
teachingwithorff.com)...
