In order to get my younger students to become quiet quickly, I say the words "Statue of Liberty." In my classroom, I have a five-foot poster of the Statue of Liberty. We talk about what your hands are doing and become those hands. So when I say "Statue of Liberty," students pretend to hold a book in one hand and a torch in the other hand above their heads. Since statues can't move or talk, the students know that they cannot move and must quit talking. Parents love this and even shared with me that they use it at home. It's fun, quick, and effective.
