To accompany The Friendly Beasts - Book by Tomie dePaola, you could add a simple non-pitched rhythm instrument on each verse - just playing the first beat on each measure. The instruments could be something that seems to fit each animal. In the past I have used a maraca shake for the sheep, a guiro for the donkey, a cowbell for the cow, and a recorder unfingered (making a fluttery sound into the mouthpiece) for the dove.
