Step Lightly On The Earth

by Wendy Christensen

This little environmental ditty is the first published effort of one of our very own subscribers, Wendy Christensen. Wendy is a music teacher from Pennsylvania, and we are very pleased to include her in this issue. When we first played through Wendy's piece, we thought it would be a good choice for Earth Day (April 22), so we decided to record it.

The delicate calypso style is performed on the P/A cassette using rhythm section (piano, bass, drums, guitar, percussion) and flute. The percussion includes congas, triangle, and Brazilian metal frying pans. (Refer to Music K-8, Vol. 3, No. 1 for more information on percussion instruments.) The flute part on the cassette is played in an improvisational style, but it will work well with any C instrument playing the designated part on the piano/vocal.

The song breaks into two parts after the third verse, but they are relatively simple to learn. Listen to the children on the cassette for reference.

Text is taken from Music K-8 magazine.
