When Testing

by Teresa Jennings/John Riggio

The last time John and Teresa teamed up to write a song about testing ("Test Me," Volume 16, Number 4), we had some very positive feedback. Apparently, helping students prepare mentally for testing is an important part of the whole process. And as always, music can be integral to that. This time we are focusing more on the mechanics of taking tests - things like reading directions and budgeting time. These are also critical elements to successful, less stressful testing experiences. Plus, you asked us to write a song like this. So we did.

The entire piece is spoken and repeats exactly till the ending. There are two small spoken solos which should be easy enough to include. Just listen to our example. Listening will also help your students grasp the attitude of confidence inherent in the style.

Though we did not specify it on the music, we found that the piece works nicely for solo speakers (rappers) as well. We have included a track with this example on the recording (track 27). Our rappers were Dawson Harris, Megan Byers, Carrie Barnthouse, Avery Huffman, Alex McCormick, and Abby Clark.
