If I Could Sound Like A Frog

by Teresa Jennings

The sounds featured in this tune are basically backyard or neighborhood animal sounds. They are easily recognized and imitated. Ask your students what other backyard animals they can think of. What types of sounds would they make? Substitute their animal sounds in the song for all or just some of the verses.

Have your students come up with completely different categories of sound. Discuss (and have them demonstrate) what kind of sound each animal or thing would make.

Here are some examples to get you started.

  • Types of birds: crows, pigeons, doves, geese, robins, ducks.
  • Zoo animals: lions, peacocks, monkeys, elephants, snakes, hyenas.
  • Farm animals: cows, pigs, chickens, sheep, horses, roosters.
  • Non-animal sounds: cars, trains, clocks, whistles, airplanes, drums.

You could also have them think of seasonal topics, like Christmas sounds or Halloween sounds.
