Fun!

by David & Anne Ellsworth

Crickets and summer bugs begin and end this little movement song, but you can use it any time of year that you want to encourage a bit of fun with your youngest singers. The first part of the tune is a folksy shuffle during which kids get to use gestures to demonstrate how they can consciously choose to go from feeling a "bit sad" to having "tons of fun!" Some ideas are indicated on the music, but of course, you can alter these however you like. Or even better, ask kids to dream up their own gestures, too.

At measure 17, it totally changes into a bluesy movement section, inviting kids to pretend to do some fun things, such as flying like an airplane or swinging their arms like a monkey. Again, imagination and invention are welcome here. The hardest part will probably be getting them to stop so they can sing again when the style reverts. But hey, as long as they're having fun, it's all good!
