Get Up On Your Feet

by David & Anne Ellsworth

Start the year with some funky foot moves for your young students in the classroom or on the stage when you play this song. Repetitive chorus and verse make it easy to learn and sing while leaving plenty of movementworthy moments. The poppin' bass, wah-wah guitars, skipping strings, and sassy trumpet make this tune so catchy, kids will be asking for it many times over. The real fun comes from the shout, "Get up on your feet!," which we encourage kids to do with great zeal. You will note that we left a core group of kids doing this shout on the accompaniment version of the tune, too, as we felt it was integral to the performance. It's also got the perfect attitude for reinforcement.

On the music, we've marked the claps in the introduction on beats 2 and 4, but they continue throughout. Some of these are also still on the accompaniment version to keep little hands in line. As an extension, try replacing some of the claps with stomps in place, a march around the room, or rhythm instruments. Hint: Teach young students how to do your rhythm or move of choice before you let them hear the tune, otherwise it's a free-for-all. That makes reeling them in for more direction a bigger challenge but not impossible, of course. Make it the most funky and fun energizer for your kids and the most requested song this fall, or all year long!
