Information About the Mailing List
Mailing List InformationInternet mailing lists aren't for ads, as some people mistakenly believe. A mailing list, on the Internet, is basically a group of people who exchange messages via e-mail, sort of like an old-fashioned party line or a chat system, but just a little bit slower. This has advantages and disadvantages. You don't get the immediate feedback of chat systems, but you don't have to BE THERE all the time. You can compose your messages and responses at your leisure, and often the list is archived so you can go back and catch up on stuff you missed. Internet mailing lists have been around since about 1975. They were the first and original type of online community, pre-dating Usenet, IRC, and the rest of the gang. The mailing list format lends itself to calm, thoughtful, literate, mature discussion, where relationships between the list members grow and deepen over an extended period of time. Most Internet experts feel that the mailing list format is the most civilized type of online community. So those are discussion groups. Another common type of Internet mailing list is the newsletter or announcement format, where a single writer (the list owner or moderator) broadcasts a periodical e-mail to a willing audience (and the audience doesn't participate directly). We send a periodic newsletter via e-mail to MusicK8.com Product/Bargain Outlet E-mail Newsletter subscribers (click on the link to sign up). We use the newsletter format to notify subscribers of our new products, web-only bargains, and other MusicK8.com web site happenings.
