When We Sing

by Mike Wilson

When we sing, or truly express ourselves musically in any way, something mysterious happens. We're transported, enabled, inspired, transformed in a way that can only be experienced through music. Music In Our Schools Month is the time to remind our students (and administrators) of the important role music plays in rounding out our life experience. And this song, which speaks to the mystery mentioned above, will hopefully serve to convey what takes place when we sing.

Written as a flowing ballad, instrumentation on the recording combines an acoustic rhythm section with percussion and passionate strings. Our studio kids picked up the unison melody very quickly. And, as you might guess, we spent most of our time on expression. The best presentation would be one that, though phrased dynamically, flows very smoothly. The challenge is to maintain the legato feel while using good diction so the lyrics aren't lost. Now is the time for your students to experience how music touches the heart. Hopefully, your audiences will feel it as well.
