February!

by Karl Hitzemann

What is the correct way to pronounce February? Does that first "r" really belong there? Feb-RU-ary? Feb-U-ary? Throw in the fact that it only has 28 days (well, 29 in a leap year), and it certainly is one of our more confusing months. Turns out that both of those pronunciations are correct, by the way.

To help your singers know for sure how to spell and say our second month of the year, we created "February!" If you happen to go back long enough, or just like listening to a particular Scottish pop band of the '70s, you just might think you recognize this song. It's a very lively and energetic parody of the popular hit "Saturday Night" by the Bay City Rollers.

At the beginning of the song, the singers get to clap the rhythm for two bars, then spell February twice. Once as a question and then as a statement (Right?, Right!). The melody is simple and easy to learn, and the lyrics are a bit silly, but actually give some useful information about the month of February. Be sure your singers really exaggerate the "RU" and "U" every time it comes up.

It might be fun to have your students make large letters that spell out February, and when they are shouting out the letters in the song, each letter can be held high as it comes up. You could have a "Right?" and "Right!" sign as well. If nothing else, everyone should know how to spell February after singing this one a few times!
